Let's talk about chainsaws.

Specifically mini chainsaws.

Extra extra specifically - how to tighten the chain on your mini chainsaw. Is it easy? Is it hard?

It's pretty easy.

But if you've never done it, I'll go through it step by step so you can see just how easy it is to tighten the chain.

This is going to differ for every model, but the one we use for this guide is the Taranzy Mini Chainsaw.

Be sure to check out the instruction manual for whatever mini chainsaw you have as each one will likely have different instructions for adjusting chain tension.

How To Tighten The Chain On Your Mini Chainsaw

Okay, let's get right into it. If the chain tension is anything less than fairly tight, you should tighten it.

What does fairly tight mean?

It means that when you pull down on the chain, the top of the inside of the chain should line up with the bottom of the bar. If that's hard to visualize, I've included a picture below.

Step 1: Remove The Battery

Pretty straightforward.

Take out the battery to avoid accidents while tightening the chain.

If you don't know how to take out the batter, be sure to check out our guide on how to replace the battery for a mini chainsaw.

Step 2: Tighten The Face Place

If the face plate is loose, then the chain could theoretically be loose with the bar. Make sure it's tight enough so there isn't any extra wiggle room for the chain.

Tighten the face plate finger tight.

No crazy torque is required. At least not for this model.

Step 3: Tighten Chain With Screwdriver

Use a screwdriver to tighten the screw close to the bar on the motor side of the mini chainsaw. Again, you may need to experiment with this until you get the proper chainsaw chain tension.

You wan't it to be fairly tight. Not so tight that it doesn't have give when you pull on it, but also not loose enough to see through the chain when you pull down on it.

Overtightening and undertightening the chain can damage the chainsaw so be sure to get this right. There is nothing worse than a loose chain... except for maybe your chain being so tight the mini chainsaw burns up.

Final Say On Tightening A Mini Chainsaw Chain

Okay, that's basically all there is to say about tightening a mini chainsaw chain. It isn't a complicated process - at least not for the Taranzy Mini Chainsaw.

Now if you wanted to tighten then chain on a chainsaw, then you have something a bit more difficult to deal with. But if not, mini chainsaws are good little power tools that can do most of the small jobs around the house.

FAQs

  • How Tight Should The Chain Be On A Mini Chainsaw?

The chain on a mini chainsaw should be fairly tight. It should be slightly loose on the bar, but not loose enough that the chain teeth fall out of the bar nose.
