Let me guess.

You ordered a brand new mini chainsaw, and once you got it out of the box, you realized the darn thing doesn't have an automatic oiler.

Well, don't worry. Okay, maybe a little bit because you need oil a mini chainsaw for it to run smoothly.

I am going to teach you how to oil a mini chainsaw in less than a thousand words.

How To Oil A Mini Chainsaw: Step-By-Step Guide

Things You'll Need:

  • Mini Chainsaw
  • Chain Oil or Vegetable oil
  • Squeeze bottle (oil applicator)
mini chainsaw bottle and oil

Step 1: Turn On The Safety

If your chainsaw has a safety lock, go ahead and turn it on now.

Otherwise, keep your hand away from the trigger until it's time to run the chain.

And it will be time soon enough.

Some people actually disengage the battery at this step, but you should be fine if you have a safety.

I don't because you'll need to use it in about 1 minute. Just keep your hands away from the trigger.

Step 2: Fill Up Oil Applicator

Okay, so at this point, you will need some sort of oil applicator. I typically use the one they give in the box. It looks like this:

Now, if you don't have one, you might want to take a drive to the local hardware store.

You will need to apply oil regularly and it can get messy - even with an applicator. Get one with a funnel and a needle if possible.

Anyways fill up the bottle with the oil. If you are going to be cutting anything you plan on eating, you should use vegetable oil. Otherwise, normal bar and chain oil will work.

As a normal cop-out, refer to the owner's manual.

Step 3: Apply Oil To The Chain

Now that you have your squeeze bottle filled up, it's time to apply it to the chain.

Point the needle, or the tip of the bottle directly at the chain. Squeeze out one to to drops of oil onto the chain.

I usually go close to the bar. See below:

Okay, great. You don't need excess oil.

Step 4: Run the Mini Chainsaw

Now that you have a few drops of oil on your chain, go ahead and release the safety and run it a few times.

You'll notice that the chain actually moves the oil. You have now primed the chain.

However, you should do this a few times to make sure you get it all over the surface of the chain.

Go back to Step 3 and repeat until you feel like you have oiled the chain enough.

Step 5: Cut Branches

Now that you are oiled up, it's time to start trimming branches. Get outside and start cutting away at whatever side project you have planned.

Now, keep in mind every 15 to 20 cuts (depending on the size of the branch) you are going to want to apply oil again. That's one of the major downsides of having a mini chainsaw. Usually no oil reservoir.

You are the automatic oiling system. There is no way to check your oil level. Oh okay, just look at the chain and see if it's time to add oil.

So you either have to carry the oil around with you, or you need to go back to your garage and lubricate the chain again.

Now You Know How To Oil A Mini Chainsaw

Just when you thought putting bar and chain oil on a mini chainsaw couldn't be any more complicated, I write this extremely complicated post to save your life.

Chainsaw bars need oil otherwise the chain will burn up. And these mini chainsaws are particularly sensitive so don't skip this step.

All it takes is a few drops, and your chainsaw should be running smoothly. Get out there and get to work!
